January - February 2011
On January 9th, we begin our Sunday evening Vespers Services in the Fellowship Hall. The word "vesper" has two meanings:
it is a drink served up by James Bon in the movie Casino Royale, and it is an evening gathering given over to songs and scriptures.
The second usage is what concerns us. Our Vespers Service will provide an opportunity for us to gather at the close of the Lord's Day. We will have an opportunity to read the Scriptures together
and bring your prayers and praises to the Lord. We will read through the Psalms consecutively to center our hope and trust in God.
Our services will begin at 5 pm and will conclude before 6. Part of our time together will be given to a 15 minute homily by Pastor Rick, Dave Rogers,
Jay Scharfenberg, Jon Bonomo, and other men gifted in preaching. We will also serve communion on the first and third Sunday evenings, allowing us to partake each Sunday either in the morning or evening.
For those of our church family who miss the morning service we now have another opportunity to meet with God's people on Sunday.
The homilies will be focusing on Paul's Epistle to the Ephesians, a book very relevant for today. Paul writes his letter to a church much like our own,
marginalized in a pluralistic culture tolerant of many things but not of the Christian gospel, or the church which proclaimed it. Here is the message of Ephesians*:
- We need to know we are secure; we are anchored in the eternal purposes of God.
- The world is a dark and dangerous place; but Christ has come to conquer all our enemies.
- We are under pressure to conform to the world; but God has raised us out of spiritual death into his light.
- We are confronted constantly with paganism; Jesus has brought us into a new community, the family of God.
- We live in a society that gives no encouragement to walk in grace; we need to know how God can transform our speech, our work, our sex life, our relationships and our marriages.
- God's purpose for the church is to break down the destructive walls of separation and bring reconciliation, peace and unity into our lives.
- Ephesians provides us with reason to celebrate our spiritual riches in Christ; his blessings are not meager but abundant.
We invite you to join us in the celebration of our life in Christ, and the encouragement we will give each other to live as children of the light.
